Mary Queen of Scots
Mary Queen of Scots was a wonderful lady who had a very tragic life.
She was born in Linlithgow Palace in central Scotland in 1542
and when she was only six days old her father, the King of Scotland, died.
And so, not yet a week old, she became Mary, Queen of Scots.
From that day on, it seemed that men and women fought over her welfare and safety and almost always for their own ends.
At the age of five or six she was sent to France for safety and lived in the Champagne country, looked after by her mother, Mary of Guise.
When she was barely old enough, she married Francis, the Dauphin of France in an arranged wedding designed only to cement friendly relations between Scotland and France.
Francis was a sickly child and apparently suffered from all known ailments. Some say he was mad but he was destined to become the King of France when his father, Henry II, was tragically killed in a jousting contest, with his successful opponent becoming the most unpopular man in France for accidentally killing his own King.
So at only sixteen years old, Mary became Queen of France as well as Queen of Scotland.
Her husband the king was a chronic invalid and by all accounts he went mad and died after only two years on the throne, so Mary became a widow at eighteen.
Of course, Mary had an undeniable right to the throne of England. Henry the Eighth had six wives and many argue, especially Catholics like Mary, that divorce was not legal and therefore all his children by every Queen, after the first one, were illegitimate.
This made Elizabeth, the crowned Queen of England, illegitimate in their eyes and Mary her cousin was therefore next in line through her grandfather Henry VIIth and therefore, the rightful Queen of England.
Controversy and drama followed her all her life and it is not surprising that her ghost returns to seek help.
Why has she appeared so often to our author? Could he have influenced or changed history if he had been alive at her time? And has she something further she requires him to do for her? Read the book to find out!
